THE VERY FIRST (HISTORY)

In 1898, merchant of the First Guild Alexei Morozov executed the will of his father Vikuly Morozov and donated RUB 400 thousand to the city towards the construction of a children’s hospital. The Moscow City Duma also contributed funds from the City Treasury. A total of nine hectares were allocated for the facility near Konnaya Square on Mytnaya Street.

In 1903, the city and sponsors opened the major children’s hospital with 340 beds.
The Moscow City Duma adopted the decision to supply the new hospital with not just 150 beds, as initially suggested by V. A. Morozov, but a total of 340 full-time and 80 additional beds to make it the largest children’s hospital in Moscow.

Following the directions of the patron, future head surgeon and then-young surgeon T.P. Krasnobaev toured 30 of the best medical facilities in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Austria and France, finding out what things could be useful in the construction of the children’s hospital in Moscow.

He explained to the philanthropist how to build a hospital that «rivals its European counterparts

The first hospital buildings were comparable with the best foreign hospitals of the time.

The hospital’s history has numerous instances where the phrase «for the first time» is used.
In 1905, for the first time in the country, Morozov Hospital began to conduct radiographic studies for children.
Individual boxes began to be used for the first time in the 1930s; these are isolated rooms for infectious patients. Later, several buildings for 120 boxes were built.

In 1932, the first children’s Department of Otolaryngology was opened in the city.
This was followed by the first Department of Rheumatology in 1934.
In 1937, the hospital began to train nurses for the urban children’s hospitals for the first time.
In 1947, the country’s first children’s ward for the treatment of meningitis and tuberculosis was opened.
The 1960s saw the appearing of the first branches: for newborns with nervous system lesions, hematological — for leukemia patients, as well as a pediatric cardiovascular dispensary.
In 1970, the hospital was the first in Moscow to open a children’s Neurosurgical Department.
Around the same time, doctors organized the first ophthalmologic care service for children.
In 1982, CT-scan was first used on children.

Ever since the hospital was commissioned, much work has been dedicated to the improvement of the professional qualifications of its staff.

The authority and professionalism of the doctors, the special attention and care given to the young patients by all medical personnel, as well as the qualified medical care provided have all contributed to the hospital’s popularity.
The number of patients treated has steadily increased every year.

One characteristic feature of the hospital has always been improvement of treatment processes.

A great deal of attention was paid to properly equipping the hospital.

Morozov Hospital became the cradle of a number of schools and specialty areas of domestic pediatrics under the leadership of its key figures:

  • Pediatric Pathological Anatomy (Prof. T. E. Ivanovskaya and A.G. Talalaev)
  • of Infectious Diseases (Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences N.I. Nisevich and Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.F. Uchaykin),
  • Oncology and Oncohematology (Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences N.S. Kislyak and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences A.G. Rumyantsev),
  • Endocrinology (Professor M.M. Bubnova, M.I. Martynova and Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences V.A. Peterkova)
  • Neurology (Academician of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences L. O. Badalyan, Professor A.S. Petruhin)

  • and other famous pediatricians who worked at different times at the hospital, made her research and practical school famous in Russia and abroad.
